June 22nd ride with David to Lake Shasta Empty June 22nd ride with David to Lake Shasta

Post by JeffR Tue May 27, 2008 7:18 pm

Hello,

Would anyone like to ride on Sunday June 22nd? I can't ride all the way up to Lake Shasta with David but I can ride a good part of the way up. Would others like to make a Sunday ride out of this? Maybe we can ride with him for a couple of hours and pick a nice scenic route up and then we can turn around and come back while David, and possibly others, continue on to Lake Shasta. If you would like to make a Sunday ride out of this please respond. David, is it possible to take a somewhat scenic route up here or are you wanting to just take interstate all the way up to get there quickly?

I was looking at this map and was wondering if you would like to do a ride like this up there?

It may take you about an extra 1 to 1 1/2 hours but it should be a good ride.

I would have loved to have join you, but my wife and I are going on a 4 day Mexico cruise. We'll get back refreshed and ready for the "Ride for Kids", the following Sunday.

Looks like a good route. If you all come back on I-5, etc., that would make a good 4-5 hour ride.

I would be interested in this ride. Going all the way up to Shasta would be much too far for me (no iron butt on this old lady), but if you decide on a route that makes the ride a total of 4 hours or so, count me in! :-)

Sam,

Sounds good. I can't ride all the way up either since I'm in Fremont. Can you give me a location you can ride too? This way I can look on Yahoo maps to find a nice scenic route to take. We can just come back down I-5 to get back quick.

June 22nd ride with David to Lake Shasta Empty Ride toward Shasta

Post by David Fri May 30, 2008 12:28 pm

Obviously I don't know what Sam will respond, but it looks like your proposed route up to Williams via backroads and back via I505-I80 would be about four hours. It's about halfway to Shasta Lake. A few miles north is Willows which has a great little restaurant on the airport. I've flown in several times.

Jeff, the route map as posted looks good to me. It's a pretty ride heading up 29 through Napa to Clearlake and then over to Williams. Might be a little hot, but definitely pretty! Coming back down I-5 is good for me, too. I assumed that you guys will change it around a bit before the actual date of the ride.

I might want to meet you guys in Napa & pick up the ride from there, depending on where you & David plan to meet & what time.

June 22nd ride with David to Lake Shasta Empty Meet up

Post by David Fri May 30, 2008 6:09 pm

Since we'll be heading up hwy 29, I would suggest the intersection of hwy 29 and hwy 37. Maybe the same Denny's where we met for the first Delta ride a couple years ago. It's easy off and easy on. We haven't set a time, but I would suggest a start time of 10:00 so people will be home by 2:30--3:30 (Depending how much we stop and dawdle or gawk or hang or . . . I'll get to the Denny's early for breakfast.

You mean the Denny's in Vallejo, on Sonoma Blvd? That sounds good. See you on the 22nd at 10am.

June 22nd ride with David to Lake Shasta Empty Would be glad to have company the whole way

Post by David Sun Jun 01, 2008 1:55 pm

If anyone wants to go all the way to Shasta with me rather than come back down on the 22nd, I would welcome that. I'm planning to spend the night, have Russell work on my seat in the morning, then come back on Monday afternoon. You could ride around the Lake Shasta dam area while I wait for my bike.

David & Sam,

The map I attached was just an idea. I really don't know this area at all so if we/you want to change this route that is fine with me. If it seems a bit long going this route please say so since I don't really know this area at all. Thanks for GPS !!!

David,

I meant that since I don't know my way around too well, outside of my area, that GPS is a godsend to me. So that's why I said Thanks for GPS. Or if you were to buy me a Zuma 550 with the proper mounting for my Silver Wing, then of course, I would say "Thanks for GPS". lol!

June 22nd ride with David to Lake Shasta Empty Got it.

Post by David Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:19 pm

I couldn't remember giving you a gps, but then I figured that maybe my memory was finally going.

Actually, I can't buy a Zumo because they don't have a screen I can see comfortably. When you get old and decrepit, you need a bigger screen (In addition to some other things we won't mention in a family oriented group.) However, discovering that my Nuvi 250W can't handle routing via designated waypoints has made it almost useless. So when Costco let me know that they have a sale on the new Nuvi 760 for $350, I just ordered one. According to Garmin, it has everything the Zumo has except waterproofing. But it does have the 4.2 inch screen. It should be here in a couple days. It will also let me install the new maps for Mexico that have just come out.

David,

I have the Nuvi 200 and know what you mean. I just go in and program the various points along the route. My next GPS will be a bit more advanced but we bought it for the car and not the bike. I am going to order the mounting bracket instead of using my cheap homemade gizzmo.

David,

Do you still want to meet next Sunday at the about location? At the intersection of Hwy29 and Hwy 37 at the Denny's? If so I can be there by 9:30 or 10:00. It should be a good ride.

Ride safe,

June 22nd ride with David to Lake Shasta Empty Good route for June 22

Post by David Sat Jun 21, 2008 12:50 am

I'm really psyched for this ride. But also looking forward to getting the minor changes in the saddle. I love this saddle, but there are a couple of things they will fix. Also, this will be my longest ride so far. I've talked about riding to Mazatlan but never got anyone else interested.

Garmin Nuvi 250W is ok, but the lack of routing makes it less useful. Costco had the Nuvi 760 for $350. I ordered one. But when I saw it I returned it. It is supposed to do everything the Zumo does, but not be waterproof. Unfortunately, they didn't use the USB connection for power. Instead it has a very flimsy flat plastic connector that I know is going to break. If they came out with a wider screen Zumo I would be tempted. I really miss my gpsmap60 csx. That did everything--but again, the screen was too small for my use.

There is only one motel in Shasta Lake City. I reserved a room, but I read some customer reviews and they all said that this motel is a dump. Maybe it has improved by now. <g>

BTW. I'm also thinking of a trip in August around Lake Tahoe and up to Carson City, if anyone is interested.

In case anyone checks this moring: I'm on for the ride and will see you at Denny's by 10:00 AM - probably earlier since I'm hungry.

I might suggest we cut off in Napa and go over Howell Mountain Road or Chiles/Pope Valley Road to Pope Valley Road to Butts Canyon Road and come into Middleton that way. I did this very ride not too long ago and it is awesome mountain roads and beautiful valleys.

On the way back on that ride, we came back down along the west shore of Lake Berryessa, down into Fairfield and right onto 680 from there. That was awesome too.

We can talk at Denny's!

June 22nd ride with David to Lake Shasta Empty Great ride. Thanks

Post by David Tue Jun 24, 2008 1:11 am

We had a great ride up past Clear Lake and then out to Williams. I assume you all came back straight down I5, but you did discuss going around the back way.

I'm pretty chicken on some of the curves. Not quite willing to trust the vehicles coming the other way. Sure enough, on one curve, the on-coming car was way over in my lane. Fortunately it was at a point where there was a passing lane I could get into.

The rest of the trip was smooth and I got to Shasta Lake City about 4:30. I read some really bad reviews of the little motel, but actually it was fine. Not a high-end place, but clean and everything worked.

I was at the Russell shop at 8am and greeted by both the office manager, Heather, and the guy who built my saddle originally and would do the adjustments. After they got photos of what I wanted, Heather was kind enough to drop me off at the Starbucks and I spent the next couple hours reading. She then picked me up and I got to sit in the seat so they could make sure everything was to my liking. Another couple hours of finishing and recovering and by 1pm I was ready to leave.

I took almost five hours to get home, but stopped for lunch and a couple of breaks along the way.

All in all it was a lot of fun and a learning experience. After a couple hours, riding the slab home got pretty boring.

So thanks again Sam, Jeff, and Tom.

Hey David,

Welcome back. I'm glad you were able to get your seat adjusted to your specs. I had a great time and a nice relaxing ride and hope we can do that ride again, maybe in the cooler times, even though it wasn't bad really. Here is a photostory of our ride.

Thank you David, Jeff, and Tom, for such a nice ride! I had a great time, and if you ever plan to ride that way again (when it's not so smoky), count me in! It was a pleasure to meet you all.

And Jeff, thanks for the slide show. It took me a while before I figured out that you were not just randomly putting your fist up in the air, or making some obscure hand signal, and that you were actually taking photos.
:-) (I'm a little slow, but I catch on eventually.)
